Summer Annual Grassy Weeds

Crabgrass, foxtail, barnyardgrass,
goosegrass, and sandbur (shown above) are summer annual grassy weeds. These weeds germinate from midspring through midsummer and will continue to grow until the first hard frost or freeze. Mowing often causes summer annual grassy weeds to "stool", sending out new stems and shoots from the base of the plant. A pre-emergent applied in the spring is the most effective way to control this type of weed.
Summer Annual Grassy Weed Control...
-
A healthy lawn is the best control.
-
Use a post-emergent such as MSMA or DSMA. Works best when applied to young plants.
-
Applying a pre-emergent in the spring is the most effective method of control. |
Be a Wiser Water User...
5 Quick Tips |
|
1. Now is a good time to check your sprinkler system for leaks and broken sprinkler heads.
2. Make sure you're watering your lawn...not the sidewalk or pavement.
3. Water early in the morning with a sprinkler that uses large water drops, not a fine mist.
4. Water deeply but infrequently to encourage deep root growth. Strong roots make grass more drought resistant.
5. Avoid watering on windy days. | |

Poa Annua
- Poa Annua is a grassy weed.

- Use a post-emergent such as MSMA or DSMA. Works best when applied to young plants.
- Apply a pre-emergent in the fall.
Nutsedge
- Nutsedge is a grassy weed.
- Limit tuber production by removing small nutsedge plants.
- Remove small plants by pulling them up by hand or using a hoe. Be sure to remove the whole plant including the tubers.
- Nutsedge populations can be reduced by shading, drying, and mulching.
- Use a post-emergent herbicide such as Image.
- Apply a pre-emergent in the spring.
Cheat Grass

I'm looking for a Natural Solution to control Fire Ants...any ideas?
H Bar H Turf farms are Fire Ant Free Zones...some of our customers aren't so fortunate!
Fire ants are a variety of stinging ants known for their aggressive behavior. They will live in almost any soil but prefer open, sunny areas such as pastures, parks, lawns,
meadows and cultivated fields. They look like ordinary house or garden ants, but have some distinguishing characteristics:
- Vary in size within one nest, from 1/16 to 1/5 inch long.
- Dark reddish brown in color on the head and body, with a darker abdomen.
- Mounds can be more than 15 inches high, 15 inches in diameter and up to 5 feet deep.
- When disturbed they are extremely aggressive.
- Their painful stings raise small welts.
Are there Natural Ways To Control Fire Ants?According to our friends at Garden-Ville (www.garden-ville.com) one solution is to drench
each mound with a soil drench. You can make your own drench with
80% compost tea, 20% blackstrap molasses and 20% orange oil. More than
one application may be required. Another suggestion is to try applying beneficial nematodes and
broadcast diatomaceous earth (be sure to follow all product label
instructions).
